Cyberpunk Photography and William Gibson

I'm cross-posting this entry from my Photography blog, as I wanted to share the text (and photograph) here as well.

This is going to be a longer blog entry than normal, so you'll have to bear with me.

I am a huge fan of the writing of William Gibson, the author of pretty much my favourite novel, Neuromancer, which I first read in 1988. He is one of the few authors I had ever wanted to meet.

Well, back in 2007, he came to Winnipeg on a book tour, and he was speaking at three different events as part of the Thin Air Writer's Festival. I made a point of attending all three events, and even had a chance to talk to him briefly at each event (so much so that he even remembered my name at the third event), and he was very pleasant to talk to. I had asked him about the prevalence of artists in his writing, characters like Slick Henry from Mona Lisa Overdrive, among other things.

Now, the model in this piece, Jamie, was also present at the first event he spoke at. I had met Jamie at a local comic book convention (we both were appearing as artists there), and we knew each other enough to recognize, but hadn't really spoken a whole lot. I think it was only a few weeks later, at another convention, that we talked more (about some artwork that she had picked up at the show, if I recall correctly), but in the coming months, we began working together as part of another show. In the months and years that followed, we began hanging out more and more often, as we discovered we had a wide range of interests in common. One of which was a love of the work of Mr Gibson and much of the Cyberpunk aesthetic.

Now, ever since I began this whole Gothic Photography project, Jamie has been very interested and encouraging with it, offering a lot of advice and suggestions from her own photographic background, going so far as to even make some of her photography equipment available for my use. Periodically, we would even discuss her modeling for me, mostly in relation to the robot-based photography, a subject she is very interested in.

In the summer of 2011, Jamie first modeled for me, and we wound up doing some (I think) wonderful pieces together. Mostly Steampunk-style robots, with some more Cyberpunk-styled pieces in there (as well as a couple of doll photos). After the edits from that first shoot were completed, we discussed doing another shoot, something a bit more aggressive and action-based. This is my third edit from this shoot from January of this year, and it is the one I am happiest with thus far.

There is a strong Cyberpunk vibe to this piece - it's not that this character would necessarily appear in any of Mr Gibson's work (his creations are not generally so over-the-top), but it is imagery that quite possibly could appear as advertising in that work. There is, to me, a strong hint of Molly (a character from a few of his stories) in this character - in fact, in an upcoming edit, I am planning on doing an eye lens treatment on a photo of Jamie that will be much more in line with how I have always envisioned Molly's cybernetic eye coverings to be. I don't want to go so far as to recreate specific characters entirely, or even individual scenes, from his novels, but his influence definitely permeates much of my more robotic/cybernetic photography.

Cyberpunk and Cybergoth photography

I've been working on a few photos that are much more Cyberpunk and Cybergoth lately than my normal gothic work usually winds up being, and I am extremely happy with the response to them. So, I figured I'd post those last four photos in this blog as well.

It's been a while since I last did a robot photo that featured internal lighting, concentrating more on Steampunk styles for the past few months. However, this new series with Marie will be much more of a cyberpunk/cybergoth style than I've been doing lately.

I am a huge fan of the Cyberpunk genre and the writing of William Gibson in particular, and am always happy to include those influences in my illustration and photographic work. As such, I was really happy to start this soldier series with Jamie (who is herself a big William Gibson fan - in fact, we both saw him speak here in Winnipeg a few years ago before we really knew each other). There will be a few more supernatural influences in this series as it goes along, so I won't be straying too far from the initial inspirations for my gothic photography.

Another cybergoth picture of Marie. This one is a lot more overt, more sexual than most of my work, but I think it really works here. She's got a great harsh attitude that I think really sells the piece.

There are a lot of fun storytelling ideas going on in this photo, including one element I'm curious to see how many people pick up on. And Jamie continues to be happy with her cybernetic arm in this series.

A Couple Of Recent Photos

This is Marie, from a shoot we did a few days ago. We got together with the idea of doing a cybergoth photoshoot, and ended up adding in some work with that pellet gun. She was really inspired by using it, leading directly to...

...the shoot I did this evening with Jamie. We had been planning on doing a more action-based shoot, and decided to play with the same weapon in her shoot. I'll be posting finished photos from these two shoots in the coming weeks in my Gothic Photography blog.

This is easily my favourite Steampunk robot photo that I've done thus far, and it's also the most complex. It was more of a found photograph as well, as Jamie had been fixing her hair in the middle of the shoot to switch from one style of photography to another, and I found I really liked how she looked in the reflection. So, I ended up taking a few photos of her in front of the mirror, and then this happened.

This may be my favourite doll photo that I've ever done. Certainly it was one of the more complex ones, having Jamie sitting in a variety of positions on her couch to get the requisite data. The posters of Kelsie and Cat on the wall work for me as well.

Here's a particularly odd one of my assistant, Kelsie. She does this twisty thing with her back when she needs to crack it and she did it in the middle of a recent shoot. Inspired by it, I had her repeat the action in the other direction and it, in turn, inspired this rather odd photo.

Gothic Photos - robots and dolls

I haven't posted any of my photography work here for a while, so I figured I'd drop in a few that I've been doing recently.

This past Sunday, I finally did a shoot with my good friend Jamie, and this is the first finished piece from that shoot. I'm looking forward to doing more shots from Sunday, most of which will be robot pieces, but there are also a couple of doll photos in the mix and perhaps a creepy supernatural piece or two.

Captain Britain

I've been thinking about doing a Captain Britain illustration for the past little while. The second version (the one pictured here) has always been one of my favourite costume designs since I first read Excalibur #1 when it originally came out.

Recently, I've been reading through some of his stories from the mid-eighties, and came across a bit where his sister (before she became Psylocke) took up the post as Captain Britain, ably assisted by Captain UK. So, that gave me the idea of doing an illustration of the three characters together.

Why did I include the Celestial known as Nezarr in the background? I'm not entirely sure, except that I'm now thinking of doing a whole series of these pin-ups with different Celestials in the background.

There are a few influences happening here. The two most prominent are my favourite issue of the X-Men, #183 (in which he has a bar fight with Juggernaut) and the pulp hero Doc Savage.

There hasn't been too much activity on this blog lately, I realize. I've mostly been working on projects that I can't show anyone until they are officially released, so there hasn't been much to display here.

However, I have managed to sneak in some gothic photography here and there, so I thought I'd promote my gothic photography blog a bit and show some of the robot-based pieces I've been doing.

Here's one of Tina from a shoot we did in 2010. I keep meaning to merge the 'robot' and 'wings' theme, so this was a good opportunity for it.

This time, it's a picture of Kelsie tearing off her own face. I had gotten the idea of adding wiring to echo veins and arteries, putting a bit more drama into the piece.

Last Friday, I was in attendance at the Anti-Social III where Marie Noelle and I were running a photo booth again. We still have yet to sit down together to go through all the photos to decide which ones will be edited and sent out to the people who purchased tickets for them, but I thought I would show some of the photos I took (mostly as lighting tests) of my lovely assistant Kelsie.

Kelsie gracefully worked as assistant to both Marie and myself at this event, which helped us immensely.

Readers of my Gothic Photography blog will know Marie as a frequent model that I work with, but she is also a wonderful photographer, and I very much enjoy working with her at these events. In fact, she had taken this photo of Kelsie and myself at the previous Anti-Social that we both worked at, and I really love this shot!

Finally, just to put faces to names, I thought I'd post this photo of Marie, myself, and Kelsie from a shoot we all did last summer down at the University of Manitoba.

Taboo Show this weekend

This weekend is the 2nd Annual Taboo Show here in Winnipeg. This time, in addition to selling prints and showing my work I'll also be taking photographs of people at my booth and turning them into ghosts, vampires, angels, and dolls. The cost for these custom photographs will be $30 each, which includes the cost of one print (which will be mailed out - I had thought about making the prints on-site, but the quality of the prints at the company I normally get them done at is much higher than the ones I could make there).

Major Website Overhaul

I just finished a complete retooling of my website, something I had been thinking about doing for a while. The old design was fine, but I was getting a bit tired of it. Plus, it didn't really reference my photography very much, so I've added in a gallery for that.

My assistant Kelsie recently started playing in the Champions game I've been in for a while, and this is her character in the game, Arctic Wolf. Since almost all of my experiments in this new painting style were primarily armour-based, I decided to do this piece so I could work with a couple of different textures with it.
Granted, this rubber/latex approach isn't all that different from some of the armour effects, but it was still fun to work on.

The main focus, of course, is Tony and his Renaissance Armour. This is the armour he wore in the late 90's, just after the Heroes Reborn storyline. Fun fact - back when I worked at Digital Chameleon, we were colouring Iron Man when he wore this armour. So, it is a bit of a nostalgic piece for me.

These latest pieces are all being done as prints for me for my art table at the 2010 Central Canada Comic Con, October 29th, 30th, and 31st. I'll have these pieces, some new examples of my gothic photography, and other artwork for sale. Check out the links for more information.

Twenty-eight layers.
Wow.

I'm used to trying to paint efficiently, using as few layers as possible, keeping it down to between three and five layers. With this and the previous Iron Man painting, however, I'm playing with keeping every bit that could possibly be separate on it's own layer (in a similar fashion to some of my photography), and I find I am really enjoying the results.

But...wow. Twenty-eight layers.

Another Iron Man piece for that show next month. At this rate, I may just get a few more armour designs in.

There is a comic convention next month that I was wanting to get a new Iron Man piece for, so I sat down to work on this experiment. This is my first attempt at freehand painting, rather than colouring within an illustration, in Photoshop and I am extremely pleased with the results! I am thinking of doing a series of various armours using this technique, one I have been playing with with the robot and doll photos in my Gothic Photography.

I've been asked quite a few times to do something of a discussion of the process whereby I edit one of these photos, so I thought I'd begin with this photo.

First is the base shot of my lovely assistant Kelsie. This was taken back in October of 2009. When I was going through the photos from that shoot, this one really jumped out at me as something that could benefit from a set of wings. The only problem, however, was that there was no room behind and around her for those wings to appear.

A couple of weeks later, I was taking photos around downtown Winnipeg, just simple background stuff, and grabbed this shot in the basement of the VIA Rail station. My initial idea for the photos taken around these columns were as self-promotional pieces, but I found I liked how this column in the foreground synced up with Kelsie's pose.

So I copied just Kelsie from that first photo and placed it into the background plate. When copying pieces of images, I like using the Quickmask setting in Photoshop and paint in the selection with the airbrush tool (with a hard edge).

Now, the pose and basic lighting lined up well enough, but Kelsie was, of course, not casting any shadows on the floor or column. I then created a new layer under the Kelsie layer to paint those in, setting said layer to Multiply so that the shadows would interact with the texture underneath and not just hover on top.

Next came the wings. These are hand-painted using a Wacom stylus and tablet with a variety of my own custom brushes. Periodically, I create my own brushes from photographed textures or designs made with other brushes. The wings were left a bit blurry to indicate movement and also leave in a sense of other-worldliness, rather than being made to look like costume props.

Another layer set to Color to gray out the bulk of the colour on the page.

With her one eye exposed, I felt that a glowing red eye would work here. So, hand-painting it like I did the wings, this was all done on a Screen layer.

With the core photo illustration completed, it now came down to adding a texture to the entire photo. I scanned an old tuxedo shirt of mine and dropped it onto another layer above everything else, set to Multiply. I then erased most of this texture, just giving hints of the dark shadows from the folds of the cloth.

Then, the highlights from that shirt were added on another layer above that, this time set to Screen. Again, I erased most of it, just leaving in select highlights as to not completely overwhelm the figure underneath.

The entire photo is then given the proper black border. I was still playing around with different picture dimensions at this point, which is why the border sizes can vary a bit in some of my earlier work.

This was a very simple edit, on par with the bulk of the ghost and vampire edits that I've been doing. I'll be doing another process discussion on a ghost image later, as well as the more complex doll and robot edits.

I am still working on my Gothic Photography , and it continues to be a lot of fun. I thought I'd post a few of the recent robot series that I was working on. Underneath each image will be a link where prints can be purchased.

At one particular show I was doing ghost photos at, I did an effect where I gave one girl black eyes. Kelsie really loved that effect, and has been after me to do more with that idea. So, I decided it would work well with this photo of her and Marie.

When Kelsie saw this photo, she immediately wanted to be turned into some sort of 'Spider-Bot'. Thus, I put in something of a spider web pattern into her metallic surface.

I'm definitely playing a bit more with the 'merged robot' concept that I did here and with the previous shot. I have some solid ideas for other shots from the same shoot as this one to play with regarding that motif.

PITCHED 2: Something a little different

And now for something a little different.

I've wanted to work with artist, colorist, and photographer Ian Sokoliwski for some time now. He's not just a very talented guy, he's also funny and wacky and unusual in all the right ways. (Check out my interview with Ian to see what makes Ian the Professional Colorist tick.)

So needless to say, I was pleased when he agreed to jump on board for Pitched 2, the second in my series of comic anthologies. Ian has paying work that has to take priority, you see, so I'm honored he carved out time for me. I was inspired by his Gothic photography, specifically his series of doll pictures, and had a story in mind based on the visuals he was creating.

But I wanted something that wasn't very traditional. Maybe wasn't even comics, exactly, but rather something that merged his evocative images with my words in a way that managed to be its own thing. Something along the line of the text-and-images pieces in Dave Sim's brilliant Jaka's Story. Ian liked the idea and the rest is history.

Will we succeed in creating something great? I don't know. It will be a challenge. I'm setting lofty standards for myself. Ian sure isn't making living up to my end of the bargain easy when he creates images as amazing as this one:

This is the reason I do these Pitched anthologies. Because it gives me a chance to push myself in unexpected directions, driven by talented people like Ian and Kelsie.

I am extremely pleased by this project. I've been having a lot of fun working on it, and had a great time doing the initial photoshoot with Kelsie and Tina Maria Wednesday Manjzij, the two models for the shoot. Combining these photos with an actual narrative got me thinking in a different way, and I really like the results. I'm thinking about ways to incorporate these ideas into upcoming shoots.

I'll be posting more information on this project (and the anthology itself) soon, but I thought it would be nice to have something written up by the writer first.

As frequent readers of this blog may know, I spent much of the summer of 2009 photographing cosplayers. Since I got into my own Gothic Photography phase, however, I haven't done any of that. In the next few weeks, however, I'm looking to get back (in a small way) into that, mostly working with some of the models that have helped with my Gothic work.

Now, I am a big fan of the webcomic Questionable Content. It does remind me of my University days a lot (although our AnthroPC's were more rebuilt C0C02's and TI-99/4a's, but whatever), and some of my models are also into QC. So, a few of us are looking at potentially recreating some of the strips from the comic as cosplay shoots, and this is something of a 'dry run' on the characters.

Here we have my assistant Kelsie cosplaying as the post-Goth character Dora. The hair colour and shirt were redone in Photoshop, I freely admit, to better match the source material.

So, I'll be appearing at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo later this month, selling prints of my illustrations and gothic photography, as well as original artwork. I'll even be doing commissions and sketches there.

It's on April 24th and 25th, at the BMO Round Up Centre Hall D and E at Stampede Park, Calgary, Alberta.

This is a pretty big deal for me - I've been doing more and more shows in the past few years, but this is the first one that I'll be doing away from Winnipeg. I'm hoping I do well at it - it will somewhat determine what sorts of shows I'll start doing away from town in the coming years.

This one took a bit longer than I had anticipated, mostly to determining the best method to paint it. I ended up going with a hand-brushed look in keeping with the ink wash used in the lineart.
This features Batman and Robin against the Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, and the Riddler.

Spirit Seekers Canada Conference

I thought I'd post up something about a show I'll be at this weekend, the Spirit Seekers Canada Conference.

I'll have prints for sale, but I'll also be doing 'live' ghost photos. That is, I'll be taking photos of people at the show and then transforming them into ghosts. If all goes well, I should be providing prints of these photos within, oh, a half hour (probably less) from when the photo is taken (the printing process will be a bit of an experiment - if it doesn't work out as planned, I'll either send a hi-rez copy of the finished piece to an email address or burning it to CD for the client, either of which can then be taken and printed). The cost of this will be $30 per photo.

This should be quite interesting. I'm looking forward to this event, as I've not done this sort of photography on-site as it were before.

The conference itself takes place at the Hotel Fort Garry (and, thus, the backgrounds I'll be putting the ghosts against will be spectacular!), from 9am to 5pm on Saturday, March 27th and Sunday, March 28th. See their website for more details.

I'm still not entirely sold on the hair yet, so I may change that before painting.
I'm a big fan of how corset piercings look - I can't imagine why anyone would get one, as I understand they are just temporary, but I thought that one would look cool on this image. The woman who posed for this has gorgeous muscle structure on her back, and it seemed like the piercing would be just the thing to work with that structure.

Most of the Goth Photography pictures that I've been posting here on my blog and on my Facebook gallery of goth photography are now available for sale. 8"x10" prints of them available for $10.

I will be creating a Goth Photography gallery on my website soon to better reflect the interest there has been with regards to it. I've been having a great time doing these photos, and I love the response they've been getting. I even have another goth photoshoot tentatively scheduled in a few weeks.

Colouring Darryl Banks - Starfire vs Blackfire

I am always so happy to get a chance to colour the lineart of Darryl Banks. This one was particularly cool, as I don't colour Starfire very often. And she is an awesome character.
This went really well except for initially getting Blackfire's energy FX the wrong colour - however it happened, the reference I saw used the same colours for her energy as Starfire's. But, one correction later, the client was extremely happy.
